Move or restore the appliance

A backup returns the same appliance to the moment the backup was taken. To move the appliance to another machine, you move the licence in sslbrain Cloud and set up the new appliance. Data does not move with the licence.

When you need this

Take a backup first

Take a backup before any larger change, and keep a copy off the appliance, see Save a backup and restore from it. Otherwise the backup sits on the same disk as the data it is meant to rescue.

A backup is restored from the list on the appliance that took it. It cannot be uploaded to another appliance.

Restore on the same appliance

Open System › Backup, click Restore next to the backup, and confirm. The appliance first takes a backup of the current state and then restarts.
Open the appliance with the 12 backup words once it is back up. sslbrain Cloud does not open the vault by itself after a restore, see The 12 backup words.
Check that certificates and rules are as they were when the backup was taken.

Move the licence to a new appliance

When the licence moves, the appliance that holds it now is retired at the moment the new one takes over. Until then it keeps running. Only owners and administrators on the sslbrain Cloud account can release a licence.

Log in to sslbrain Cloud, open Appliances, and open the appliance you are leaving.
Click Release the licence under Danger zone, in the Move this licence to another machine card. Type release and click Release it. The page shows the release date and “This appliance is still serving.”
Install the new appliance with the files from Downloads and requirements in sslbrain Cloud, see sslbrain Cloud.
Open the new appliance in the browser and log in with sslbrain Cloud, see First-time setup.
When setup asks for the licence, choose Move the licence from … with the name of the appliance you are leaving, see First-time setup. From that moment the appliance you are leaving shows This installation has been retired and renews no certificates.
Finish the new appliance as in steps 3 to 8: name and certificate, servers, domain validation, profiles and rules. Start with A name and certificate for the appliance.

Certificates on your servers keep working until they expire, also after the appliance you are leaving has been retired. A 90-day certificate is renewed when two thirds of its validity has passed, so there is usually a month or more before your servers need a certificate from the new appliance.

The 12 backup words

The 12 backup words open the appliance after a restore and open the data on a retired appliance, and lost words cannot be replaced. See Security.
